Shakespeare Demystified (SD) started with its maiden production Julius Caesar in 2011, followed by The Merchant of Venice in April 2012. We aspire to “un-scarify” Shakespeare, and bring the Bard closer to a diverse audience, including teens, adults, and those whose first language may not be English.

Our work is inspired by Australian director Jeff Kevin, who was invited by the Australian High Commission and klpac to conduct a workshop in 2009. This was followed by a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream in 2010 under his direction. A number of SD members took part on both occasions, and learned how Shakespeare’s works can be presented in a simple way, yet capable of drawing the audience into a fantastic and compelling world. A weaving of clever storytelling and language reveals the Bard’s rich imagination and depth of humanity.

We are a colourful bunch of Shakespeare enthusiasists from diverse backgrounds. And within SD, we don’t only act, but direct, produce, design, train and take up various other production tasks. At the very core, we all hold the strong belief that:

“Shakespeare was originally written not to be studied by geeks or seen by snobs, but to be performed for the general masses.”
