Elizabeth Taylor's publist announced today that she passed away last night in hospital surrounded by her children - Michael Wilding, Christopher Wilding, Liza Todd, and Maria Burton.

She is also survived by her 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Her son, Michael said: 'My mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love. Though her loss is devastating to those of us who held her so close and so dear, we will always be inspired by her enduring contribution to our world.

'Her remarkable body of work in film, her ongoing success as a businesswoman, and her brave and relentless advocacy in the fight against HIV/AIDS, all make us all incredibly proud of what she accomplished.

'We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for mum having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.'

A private funeral will be held later this week.

Taylor underwent heart surgery in 2009 to replace a leaky valve.

She famously married eight times, most recently to Larry Fortensky, a construction worker whom Taylor divorced in 1996.

The star was also married twice to Welsh actor Richard Burton in 1964 and 1975.

She was born in Hampstead in London and went on to become a movie icon with roles in Giant, Cleopatra, Father of the Bride and Reflections in a Golden Eye.

She also provided the voice for baby Maggie in an episode of The Simpsons.

Taylor was best friends with late pop legend Michael Jackson and supported the star when he was accused of sexually abusing a child - a charge he was later cleared of.
