HAMID GURKHA

Comedian Abdul Hamid Abdul Rahman, better known by his stage name Hamid Gurkha, shot to fame in A.R. Badul's 1978 film, Panglima Badul.

The 79-year-old from Klang initially joined the Malaysian Armed Forces. He took part in Bintang Radio Malaysia in 1965 and won first prize.

He then worked with Radio Malaysia as a comedian, at the invitation of fellow comedian Datuk Jamali Shadat. They also performed comedic skits on stage, and still do.


In the 1970s and 1980s the duo recorded several comedic skit albums produced by Life Records. They also appeared in Radio Televisyen Malaysia's costume comedies Jenaka Bangsawan, alongside the late R. Jaafar and Norlia Ghani, among others.

Hamid, a father of eight and grandfather of 30, acted in Main-Main Hantu in the early 1990s with Nancie Foo, Melissa Saila, Alice Voon and Nor Albaniah. It was his first horror film.

His other notable films include Gila-Gila (1979), Sikit Punya Gila (1982), Aku Yang Berhormat (1983), Talak (1984), Ragam Pemandu (1989), Konstabel Mamat (1992), Impian (1996), Silat Lagenda (1998), Senario The Movie (1999), Kemarau Cinta (2005), Salah Bapak (2006), Zombie Kampung Pisang (2007) and Alamak Toyol (2011).

Most recently, he appeared in Jiwa Kacau with rock group Sofazr and Senario graduates Saiful Apek and Yasin Yahya, and Halim Munan with Fizo Omar and Intan Ladyana.

Hamid won Best Comedian in the Malaysian Film Festival 1982. He is a health-conscious actor who believes that being positive and forgiving is vital for longevity.
